As news agencies face various challenges in
the rapidly changing media environment, efforts have been made to swiftly
respond to overcome the difficulties.
Apart from efforts of individual news
agencies, meaningful and substantial cooperation among the
world’s news agencies had always been a favourite topic of discussion.
As the host news agency for the 2018
PyeongChang Winter Olympic, South Korea’s Yonhap News Agency has initiated a project to provide a new
platform for news outlets around the world to share content on the
international event in real time and for free.
It is called the “PyeongChang News
Service Network (PNN)” with the tagline “Give One, Get All”.
PNN members will have access to not only
Yonhap News' content in Korean, English, Chinese, Japanese, French, Arabic and
Spanish languages but also that of fellow members without signing separate
agreements.
The members can upload their content,
including news articles in English and native languages, photos and video
clips, on the platform without limitation.
Even after the Olympics, they can
continue to use the platform to exchange content.
Some 47 news agencies all over the world have
joined the PNN and over 15 member agencies have started to upload their news
content to the network.
Bernama became a member on July 4. Yonhap
had sent two officials to briefed Bernama editors on PNN in May.
Yonhap’s President and CEO Park No-hwang had
also briefed the Organisation of Asia-Pacific News Agencies (OANA) at its
executive board meeting in Lebanon in May of the extensive Internet-based news exchange
programme.
Bernama, a member of the OANA Executive Board, attended the meeting
in Beirut.
The 2018 Winter Olympics, officially
known as the XXIII Olympic Winter Games, will be held in PyeongChang, some 180
kilometers east of Seoul, and in the nearby cities of Gangneung and Jeongseon
in Gangwon Province from Feb. 9 to 25 next year.
Through PNN, all news contents produced
during the Olympics will be uploaded and shared with all participating
newswires on the platform.
By joining PNN, members can have benefit such
as:
- able to exchange news contents with all
other participants with just a single agreement with PNN.
- having an alternative channel for world
news besides global newswires.
- distribute their news to the world with
their own perspective.
- utilize PNN as backup database or
backup editorial system.
Hwang Sun-ik of Yonhap News Agency’s International Relations Office/Global Strategy Team said he looked forward to seeing Bernama's news content on the PNN.
“Bernama's news data contribution will
make this meaningful platform more valuable and very effective one,” he said.
