General Manager Datuk Yong Soo Heong had an interesting moment when he visited bed-ridden
retired Bernama editor, Ali Mamat at his home in Dungun today.
“He
called out my name and wanted to give me
one of his beloved fishing rods!!!!
“How
can I take? I guess he remembered me as “the naughty boy from Penang",” said
Datuk Yong, who was accompanied by Editor-in-Chief Datuk Zulkefli Salleh.
Together
with Terengganu Bernama bureau chief, Amrizan Madian, they had earlier visited saudara
Abdul Rahman Yeop Norodin, retired
executive editor of Bernama General News Service and later pioneer director of
NAM News Network (NNN), also staying in Dungun.
His
house is about 10 minutes drive from Ali’s home.
“We
are just carrying out our responsibility.
“It’s
good to visit our former ‘sifus’,” said Datuk Yong on Bernama Eds WhatsApp.
When
someone remarked that it was commendable to do so as our time would also come
and hopefully someone would visit us
then, the general manager said:
They
were on hand to receive Communications and Multimedia Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad
Shabery Cheek who visited the 63
year-old Ali who is suffering from liver cancer.
Ali
is also said to be suffering from hypertension, diabetes and a minor brain
haemorrhage and frequently sought
treatment at the Dungun Hospital and the Hospital Sultanah Nur Zahirah (HSNZ)
in Kuala Terengganu.
Deputy Editor-in-Chief of General News Service Datuk Zakaria Abdul Wahab shared the following photo on Bernama Eds WhatsApp. It must have dated some 30 years back.
