A day after General Manager
Datuk Yong Soo Heong spoke about reviving “the glory days of Bernama”, some of
those big names of Bernama yesteryears
met in Dungun to rekindle their friendship.
Former executive editor
Zainoor Sulaiman took the initiative to contact several Bernama veterans to
visit bed-ridden former editor Ali Mamat at his home in the Terengganu seaside
town.
He managed to get former
General Manager Datuk Seri Azman Ujang and former Bahasa Malaysia chief sub-editor
Haji Mahrus Ibrahim to travel with him. They drove off from Wisma Bernama at around
8 am today.
Zainoor had also planned to
meet former Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) News Network (NNN) pioneer director
Abdul Rahman Yeop Norodin or Roger to us. He was Executive Editor of the
General News Service before helming NNN.
“We met both Roger and Ali
in Dungun,” said Zainoor.
“Roger was so happy to see
us. Though not well, Roger accompanied by his wife Siti Zaleha joined us to
visit Ali.
“Of course Ali was so
excited and very happy to see us.
“Despite not being well,
they were cheerful to see us,” said Zainoor.
He said Roger is going for angiogram next week.
Datuk Yong said tonight: "For those whom we can rope in to lift us back to our glory days, we will. That's my promise. But it takes 2 hands to clap."
Yesterday he had announced plans to beef-up editorial training programme at Bernama's Centre of Excellence with the services of Ahmat Wahab and S.Sivaselvam, two highly-respected editors of those glory days.
Arriving home at about 10pm tonight, Datuk Seri Azman said the 14-hour journey was well worth it, thanks to the safe driving of Haji Mahrus.
"Alhamdulillah the trip met its objective," he said.
He was concerned with Ali's condition.
"I think he can't take his chemotherapy treatment any longer and having other medical problems as well. He has stopped eating...," said Datuk Seri Azman.
On Aug 5, Terengganu Menteri Besar Datuk Ahmad Razif Abdul Rahman said the state government was willing to help Ali, 63, to get specialist treatment.
Ali who is suffering from various ailments such as liver cancer, high blood pressure, diabetes and mild hemorrhage in the brain, has to frequently seek treatment at hospitals.
