Somalia's Deputy Prime Minister Mohamed Omer Arteh, who is on his maiden trip to Malaysia, visited the family of the late Bernama TV cameraman, Noramfaizul Mohd Nor, today.
Mohamed Omer met Noramfaizul's father Mohd Nor Mat Yasin, 72, and 68-year-old mother, Naemah Abd Majid.
He offered his condolences on behalf of his government.
Noramfaizul was killed by a sniper's bullet while covering the Kelab Putera 1Malaysia humanitarian mission to help famine victims in Somalia on Sept 2, 2011.
"I pray that he will receive the highest Jannah (paradise). I'm sorry for what had happened.
"We want to express our sorrow at the unfortunate incident. At the same time, I'm happy to meet his parents and bond with the family," he told reporters at the family's home in Serdang Raya, near Kuala Lumpur.
The visit was coordinated by Kelab Putera 1Malaysia president and Baling Member of Parliament, Datuk Seri Abdul Azeez Abdul Rahim who had also accompanied Mohamed Omer to visit Noramfaizul's grave.
Mohamed Omer is on a working visit to Malaysia from March 9 until today. This is his first visit to Malaysia since being appointed as Somalia's deputy prime minister in February 2015.
When met by reporters, Naemah expressed her gratitude to Mohamed Omer for taking the time to be with the family.
"We will always remember him (Noramfaizul) fondly, especially the last moments he spent with the family before leaving for that fateful trip to Somalia.
"I still remember his advice, last surprise gift, his jokes. He will always be remembered. Please keep him in your mind and prayers," said Naemah who could not hold back her tears as she recalled memories of Noramfaizul, her eldest and only son out of her six children.
In the incident, TV3 cameraman Aji Sarigar Mazlan also suffered injury in the arm as a result of a shrapnel which penetrated Noramfaizul's shoulder.
