Covering
international meetings provide opportunities for journalists to broaden their knowledge and reporting skills.
To prepare for
such assignment, a reporter needs to equip oneself with background information
of the issues related to the conference.
Being prepared
is a basic rule to develop good reporting skills.
Journalist Nur
Ashikin Abdul Aziz said she read from online and Bernama copies on
Rohingya-related issues to equip herself for an international meeting on the
issue held in Kuala Lumpur today.
“We need to read
(about the issue) so that we do not repeat what had been reported,” she
said.
The Organisation
of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) special foreign ministers meeting on the situation
of the Muslim minority Rohingya in Myanmar was convened at the request of the Malaysian Government.
For journalists
like Nur Ashikin, covering the assignment was interesting as it enabled her to
meet and talk to the relevant people.
“I’m passionate
about being a journalist,” she said.
She was also
happy that she had made some contacts.
This was echoed
by journalist Samantha Tan who was happy to cover the assignment as it gave her
“exposure to global issues (and) strengthen contacts”.
“I understand
more and clear (of the issue)…it will help in my writing or covering future
assignment,” she said.
Getting the team to cover
the event has its advantage for Bernama as it pooled the strength from the
various sections.Reporters and photographers from the editorial services were selected along with colleagues from Bernama News Channel and Bernama Radio to carry the Bernama banner in highlighting the issue.
