After two years of ‘knowing’
Bernama, veteran American newspaper and television news editor Robert Besser is
convinced that Bernama is a sophisticated news agency, more advanced than many
others.
“From my perspective, this
is one of the giants in terms of news business in South-East Asia.
“And I see it easily because
I am a foreigner, maybe the people here don’t see it. Compare you with the
other agencies I worked with, this is a giant,” said the Chicago-based newsman.
Besser, 57, heads a team
specializing in editing work with news agencies all over the world to improve
their copies.
Asked to elaborate on the
reason for his high regards for Bernama, he said:
“I can tell you this because
I’ve work with a number of agencies in the world,
“Bernama is a very
sophisticated agency, you have a lot of departments,
“You do so many different
things, much more complicated that the other agencies are doing, much more comprehensive,
“You provide more news every
day than the other agencies, television and radio, “It’s much more complete
than the other agencies, they are doing minimal, you’re not, you’re doing on
par with the larger agency …
He said Bernama has no
choice but to be a world class news agency.
Why?
“Because Malaysia is
becoming a world class destination…you are now a real power house in Asia in terms economically, education,
healthcare ,
“Young people are starting
businesses and they are all over the world and coming back with new ideas,
“Malaysia is going to
be a fast-paced country with a lot of
development.
“Who is going to report
this..only Bernama.
“Foreigners cannot report
this , they cannot come in to Malaysia and read three books and claim to know
about your country.
“The only people who know
about your country are Malaysians and they are the only ones who can write and
show the true picture of Malaysia to the world.
“I think the demands on the
agency are going to be greater to show Malaysia and all its complexities to the
world who you really are.
“ And who you really are is
going to be something that matters to the rest of the world because they want
to know about Malaysia,
“They want to know about
Malaysia because they are going to buy products from “Malaysia, they want to
know about healthcare in Malaysia beacuse it’s an important country.
“And
it’s incumbent upon Bernama to show the world, only Bernama, there’s no one
else to do this.
