From Yong Soo Heong
The role of the media in
building trust and cooperation in the Asia-Pacific region will be one of the
three topics to be discussed at the 15th General Assembly of the Organisation
of Asia-Pacific News Agencies (OANA) beginning in Moscow tomorrow until Friday.
This year's assembly is hosted by ITAR-TASS, the Russian national news agency.
OANA was formed in 1961 on the initiative of UNESCO (United Nations
Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation) to secure direct and free
exchange of news between the news agencies of a region inhabited by more than
one half of the world's population.
Two other topics which will be the subject of discussion are
"Globalisation and the authority of the media in the maintenance of
national interests of Asian-Pacific countries" and "Transmedia
communications and news business challenges".
Delegates from the 44-member organisation will also elect the president, four
vice-presidents and six members to the OANA Executive Board as well as the OANA
General Secretary for the next three-year term at this year's assembly.
ITAR-TASS Director-General Sergey Mikhaylov will speak at the opening ceremony
on Thursday besides OANA President Kemal Ozturk, who is also President-Director
of Turkey's Anadolu Agency.
BERNAMA, the Malaysia national news agency, is represented by its General
Manager, Datuk Yong Soo Heong, who is also one of the four vice-presidents of
OANA.
