Vietnam News Agency (VNA) is
seeking support from other news agencies in Asean to form the Asean News
Confederation in order to make Asean news agencies a "bigger voice"
in the region.
The VNA Director of Secretariat and Editorial Department Vu Viet Trang said this was in line with the establishment of the Asean Community by end of this year.
She said that VNA had discussed the possibility of setting up the confederation with Indonesia's Antara news agency in June last year.
"All news agencies in the region should strengthen cooperation so that they can make their voice bigger and widespread in the Asean region.
"Since the Asean community is to be achieved by the end of 2015, that is why we should do something under that umbrella," she told Bernama on the sidelines of the 38th Organisation of Asia Pacific News Agencies (OANA) Executive Board Meeting hosted by the Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) in Kuala Lumpur today.
She added that VNA and Antara were working with the relevant parties in Cambodia and engaging with news agencies of the 10-member Association of Southeast Asian Nations.
Meanwhile, commenting on the Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) with Bernama to formalise cooperation between the two news agencies, Trang said that VNA was looking forward to strengthening the cooperation not only in terms of exchanging of information but also extending to management experience.
"This is not the first MoA between Vietnam News Agency and Bernama. Now is the time for us to renew our agreement in order to strengthen and make our cooperation suitable to the new environment," she said.
