Call For News Agencies To Hop On Social Media Bandwagon

News agencies should adopt the social media platform in disseminating news and information, said Communications and Multimedia Minister, Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek.
He noted that social media had unleashed stiff competition to conventional media outlets including news agencies.
"The remarkable speed with which news and information travel through social media and the power of citizen journalism should not be underestimated.
"We should hop on the social media bandwagon and move ahead as more people will resort to social media in seeking news and information," he said at a dinner in Kuala Lumpur tonight for delegations attending the 38th Organisation of Asia Pacific News Agencies (OANA) Executive Board Meeting.
The meeting in the Malaysian capital was hosted by the Malaysian national News Agency (Bernama).
Present at the dinner were Bernama general manager Datuk Zulkefli Salleh, editor-in-chief Datuk Zakaria Abd Wahab and OANA secretary-general Mikhail Gusman.
Ahmad Shabery noted the numerous constraints and challenges awaiting news agencies as they sought a level playing field with social media, including resources to match the citizen journalism aspect, an innate character of social media.
"Secondly, is there a need to revolutionise the way we disseminate information as the younger generation at the other end don't read more than 140 characters, and thirdly whether we can monetise our social media effort as this is equally important for our survival?," he said.
Thus, he said, news agencies could improvise by adopting social media for speed and maintaining the time-honoured tradition of the agencies in ensuring the veracity of information delivered.
Touching on OANA's role, Ahmad Shabery said the organisation provided an important platform for member news agencies to cooperate for mutual benefit especially in a borderless world today.
He said OANA, which comprises 44 news agencies from 35 nations, had emerged as the world's largest media organisation and a major platform for direct and free information exchange in the Asia-Pacific region.
