Pakistan new High
Commissioner to Malaysia Syed Hassan Raza is committed to push for closer ties
between Associated Press of Pakistan (APP) and its Malaysian
counterpart -- Bernama.
“We need to develop a
mechanism whereby Bernama and APP can work together,” he said during a meeting
with Bernama Editor-in-Chief Datuk Zulkefli Salleh at Wisma Bernama today.
Closer relationship in the
field of media between the two countries need to be forged as the potentials had
not been fully utilized, said Syed Hassan, who assumed office in Malaysia on
Feb 27.
“I’m always very keen to
promote the relations of APP wherever I go because my father was the first
reporter of APP.
“My father used to tell me
about his APP job…he was the first reporter, this is amazing and he was with
APP for three years,” said Syed Hassan who was accompanied by the high
commision’s media officer Salwa Ahmed Musani.
APP started operation in 1947 with the independence of Pakistan.
He gave an assurance to
help expedite the revival of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Bernama and
APP which had expired in 2010 after a five-year period.
Apart from news exchange, he
said the two agencies could have
short-stay exchange programme for their journalists to have a better view of
one another.
Prior to his appointment to Malaysia, he was the Pakistan ambassador
to Qatar.
He said he was familiar with
Bernama as he often surfed the Bernama website when he was working with the
Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Secretariat in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
