Delegates from some 12 countries who attended the 38th Organisation of Asia-Pacific News Agencies (OANA) Executive Board Meeting, hosted by the Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama), were captivated by the warmth and friendliness of Malaysians.
The delegates who praised the beauty of the Malaysian capital city of Kuala Lumpur, were mesmerized by the imposing Petronas twin towers and enjoyed Malaysia's exotic food and shopping.
OANA's secretary-general Mikhail Gusman in thanking Bernama for being a "wonderful host," said that the meeting went on smoothly.
"Thank you very much. Bernama made our stay a memorable one," he said at a press conference at the end of the three-day meeting today.
Apart from the meeting, Bernama had also organised trips for the delegates to Kraftangan Malaysia, a boat cruise at Putrajaya lake and official dinner and lunch while the delegates also took time off to visit some tourist attractions in Kuala Lumpur.
Some 40 participants comprising chief executive officers and top officials representing the executive board members took part in the meeting themed 'The Advent of Social Media and Challenges Confronting News Agencies.'
Gusman said that the meeting was fruitful with representatives sharing their experiences and opinions on how social media has played a role in the production of news.
"This meeting has also changed our opinion on social media, and we look forward to incorporate it in the production of our news," he said.
Bernama deputy editor-in-chief (International News Service), Ahmad Zukiman Mohd Zain, said that hosting the meeting was a memorable one and an honour for Bernama, which is an active member of OANA.
By being the host, Bernama was able to build a close cooperation with major countries in the world through their news agencies and got to know each other better through news sharing initiatives.
"As Malaysia has assumed the Asean chairmanship this year, there is a possibility for OANA to create a community - an OANA community - like that of the Asean Community, to further enhance and strengthen news sharing," he added.
The executive board members, editorial and technical committee members who participated were Russia's TASS news agency, South Korea's Yonhap, Indonesia's Antara, Emirates News Agency (WAM), Vietnam News Agency (VNA), Bahrain News Agency (BNA), Iran's IRNA, Turkey's Anadolu, Iran's Mehr News Agency (MNA), Mongolia's MONTSAME, Australian Associated Press (AAP), Azerbaijan's AzerTAc, Kazakhstan's INA kazinform and Bernama.
OANA was formed in 1961 on the initiative of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) to secure direct and free exchange of news among the news agencies of a region inhabited by more than one half of the world's population.
The organisation's 44 news agencies from 35 countries are responsible for two-thirds of information circulated throughout the world.
