Bernama Receives Award From Indonesia For Promoting Bilateral Understading

The Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) has been bestowed with an award by its Indonesian counterpart Antara for its role in promoting mutual understanding between the people of the two countries and avoiding bilateral conflicts.
The award, presented for the first time by Antara, symbolises its highest recognition for Bernama's contributions since its establishment 47 years ago.
Bernama Chairman Datuk Abdul Rahman Sulaiman received the award from Antara Chief Executive Officer Saiful Hadi Idham Chalid, in Jakarta last night at a function, which was held in conjunction with Antara's 77th anniversary celebrations.
Also present were Indonesian President Joko Widodo and Minister of Communications and Multimedia Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek, as well as his Indonesian counterpart Rudiantara and other dignitaries.
Speaking to Bernama after the event, Saiful Hadi said the role played by Bernama would go into the annals of the two countries with its reports and coverage being rational and without any slant towards sensationalising issues.
"It cannot be denied that Bernama has played a big role, and so has Antara, in developing economic, socio-cultural, tourism and educational ties between the two countries.
"However, this role is rarely noticed unless some conflict erupts and gets public attention. When this happens, then we need to disseminate the peacemaking elements to calm down the situation
Bernama General Manager Datuk Zulkefli Salleh who was also present at the award presentation ceremony said, Bernama greatly appreciated the award that would act as a motivating force to cultivate and enhance the synergies among investors, businessmen and industry players.
"Bernama and Antara will step up their coverage of ASEAN in conjunction with the setting up of the ASEAN Community next year, so that the concept is better understood and gets the support of the people of the 10 member countries," he said.
Meanwhile, before the start of the ceremony, Ahmad Shabery held a one-hour-long discussion with his counterpart, which touched on various issues concerning Malaysia and Indonesia.
Ahmad Shabery and Rudiantara were also given the honour of being the first to receive a pictorial depicting the historical records and contributions of former Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono during his tenure as president from 2004 to 2014. The book, published by Antara, was presented by Saiful Hadi.
Presiden Joko Widodo was awarded the People's Choice Leader award and "ANTARA Achievement Award 2014" with both awards presented by Saiful Hadi.
Three other news agencies that are cooperating with Antara also received a similar award like presented to Bernama. They are AFP, Thomson-Reuters and Bloomberg.
