The media has a major role to play in
facilitating and promoting South-South Cooperation, said Communications
and Multimedia Ministry secretary-general Datuk Seri Abdul Rahim Mohamad
Radzi.
He said that as basic communication infrastructure was now available in most countries of the South, there were great opportunities to establish networks at the working and systems levels for direct linkages.
These should be encouraged and facilitated both by governments and the South media, he said at the opening of an executive talk on "South-South Cooperation in Relation to Media Democracy and Freedom of Expression" in Cyberjaya today.
"For Malaysia, Bernama, the national news agency, has initiated the network in the past and I hope it can be continued further for better cooperation," he said in his speech read out by his deputy, Datuk Mohid Mohamed.
Abdul Rahim said that apart from economic and financial sector policies, several other sectors held great potential for South-South cooperation, including strengthening media initiatives.
"Only last week, at the UN Forum in New York, our Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Anifah Aman announced that Malaysia remains committed to South-South cooperation and strongly believes it can improve the lives of citizens of developing countries," he said.
The talk was organised by South-South Information Gateway (SSIG), an agency under the ministry, that was established in 2005 as a platform for developing nations to exchange information and experiences.
It featured Minister Counsellor of the Venezuelan embassy, Enrique Gonzalez Kong, and Malaysian Foreign Ministry's Department of Policy and Strategic Planning director-general Zainol Rahim Zainuddin who each gave their country's perspective of media democracy and freedom of expression.
