Bernama
chairman Datuk Seri Azman Ujang said the letter of approval was received today
and he first made the announcement to members of the agency's Board of
Governors at their meeting this morning.
“The
board members warmly welcomed the good news and expressed deep gratitude to
Tengku Adnan for his historical decision,” he said.
Bernama’s
headquarters, Wisma Bernama, was the first high-rise building to be built along
the road and the news agency has been operating from the facility since 1984.
Azman
made the suggestion for the name change in his speech during a gala dinner to
mark Bernama's 50th anniversary last year.
This
was followed by a meeting in March this year by a team from Bernama with Tengku
Adnan and a letter to him to formalise the application.
“At
the meeting, the minister assured us that he would favourably consider the
suggestion. Tengku Adnan is a man of his words and today we received the formal
approval without much bureaucracy,” said Azman.
Meanwhile,
the lane adjacent to the newly renamed Jalan Bernama, Jalan 2/65A, has also
been renamed Lorong Bernama.
An
official from Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) when contacted said immediate
action would be taken to replace the old road-signs to Jalan Bernama and Lorong
Bernama.
Azman described the road named after Bernama as the
“most fitting” gift and recognition to all past, present and future staff of
Bernama and a legacy for the news agency’s contributions in nation-building
over the past five decades.
“We
are forever grateful to the government for this,” he added.
